The monastery at Andrechs has long been a pilgrimage destination, but when the hangman's daughter, Magdalena; her doctor husband, Simon; and their two small children arrive there, they learn that the monks have far larger concerns than saying Mass and receiving alms. While the book is called The Hangman’s Daughter, the character who seems to interest author Oliver Pötzsch the most is the hangman himself, Jakob Kuisl. A hulking creature who is ambivalent about his career as a state-approved murderer, the hangman proves to be smarter, faster, stronger, more sensitive, more decisive and (against all odds.

In , hangman Jakob Kuisl, his daughter Magdalena, and her husband Simon are traveling to the town of Bamberg. But what was planned as a family vacation soon becomes a nightmare: there is a murderer in Bamberg leaving the severed limbs of victims in the trash outside the city. Why do you think Oliver Pötzsch chose the title The Hangman’s Daughter? 8. Jakob Kuisl’s “holy of holies” is a “small study filled to the ceiling with dusty files and old books about what an executioner is and does” (p. ). What would your holy of holies contain? 9.

The eponymous Hangman’s Daughter is a secondary character at best – honestly, the book should be titled The Hangman or The Hangman and the Devil or something – and she is stunningly beautiful, high-spirited, and serves as a romantic foil for Simon and a plot-device to get the story moving as the book drags around the page mark.
